What is a Tartan?
Why is the Tartan important?
At first glance, a tartan is a pattern of interlocking stripes. But to those of Scottish descent and the millions who celebrate Highland heritage worldwide, it is far more than fabric. It is a living history, a badge of kinship, and a testimony of resilience.
The importance of the tartan is deeply tied to the Act of Proscription in 1746, which banned the wearing of Highland dress in an attempt to crush Scottish clan culture. For nearly 40 years, the tartan was a symbol of resistance. Today, when we wear our kilts and sashes on April 6th, we celebrate the fact that this culture did not just survive—it flourished.
